Children
“In my work as a whole I have always portrayed children, either relatives or neighbours from my hometown in Paraguay. They were almost invariably part of a scene representing actual things or myths that reached us through our oral culture. “Miracle”, however, is a portrait of my daughter Rosa, who was born in my home in Holland. That was an event that has become a landmark in my life and therefore, a turn where my painting was reborn.” |
Composition
“When I decided to begin another stage in my work, I undertook painting my daughter’s face as the “zero” point. The size had to be 2 x 2 metres, that was clear to me, and that was the real challenge since I do believe that there are themes far more appealing to a painter than the plain face of a baby. During the months of developing Milagro process I felt closer to abstraction than to realism because all of the time I could only see fragments in extreme close up; this was due to the fact that the details were treated like an intimist painting, one to be observed from a close viewpoint. I have always focused my fondness of developing complex compositions on canva using a lot of figures. But here, the whole thing has been reduced to the circle within the square.”
