Pieter Pander, Tension and tonality

There is always a deeper story to the characteristic paintings by Pieter Pander (1962). Pander is an important figure within the movement of Contemporary Realism and specializes in portraits of both humans and animals. He uses composition, perspective and his subjects to create an underlying feeling of tension. Pander uses with a characteristic palette of greys, blues and browns, creating paintings with great tonality of colour. He graduated at Academie Minerva in Groningen and found inspiration in the work of one of his teachers, Matthijs Röling. Another important source of inspiration was the Dutch artist Jan Mankes.
