Piet Sebens, Lifelike Still Lifes

The studio of Piet Sebens (1961) is a cabinet of carefully arranged curiosities. Every object has its own designated spot. A visitor could wonder around for hours, examining all the bits and bobs. The individual objects alone are fascinating, but the entire collection is even more wondrous to behold. Sebens’ studio is an excellent representation of his famous still lifes. The artist’s oeuvre is characterised by the extreme attention to details, combined with a clean composition. Not a single object is out of place: everything is arranged precisely so. Sebens uses a limited palette of colours, but utilises every possible hue of the colours he does use. The result is a subtle arrangement of gradients, creating a serene air. The artist is influenced by Villhelm Hammershøi and Dick Ket.
